Riley Gaines
Congressman Ralph  Norman contacted us about Riley Gaines coming to Indian Land and many ILR members attended. She spoke about her experience as an Award-winning American Competitive Swimmer.  She discussed how her purpose and life have changed due to her experiences in today’s changing world.
Riley discussed what caused her to realize the importance of ….
Not Waiting for someone else to defend what is right, but taking a stand yourself.

Her life changed due to today’s sports rules where the definition of male vs. female has become an issue for some.

Title IX, is a Federal Civil Rights law enacted in 1972 to prohibit sex-based discrimination in any school or education programs, which receives federal funds.

In 2022 Riley tied swimmer Lia Thomas – the first openly trans woman champion in the NCAA Women’s division after “winning,” the women’s 200-meter NCAA Championship.

Upon tying (within a hundredth of a second) for the award the official said “Great Job Riley, but you tied and we only have one trophy and we are giving this trophy to Lia….”

When asked why the official said “….I’m so sorry, but we have been instructed as an organization, that when the photos are taken it’s crucial that the trophy is in Lia’s hands…”

Amazing that this 24-year women is now a symbol for many to pay attention and speak up.

Health Czar Bill S.915
This bill would merge six separate agencies into one under a new
“Executive Office of Health & Policy.
On the final vote on May 9th, the bill was defeated by a” procedural move.“
Governor McMaster then called for the Legislature to “resurrect a bill that would restructure the state’s health agencies.”  (AP story May 13, 2024).

The Executive Committee invited a member of the York County GOP legislative committee to do a presentation of some “issues,” they have identified with the bill and why this bill has some unanswered questions and concerns.

There were many points brought up and this is why are hoping to get members volunteering to form our own committees to help follow such issues.  As of this writing it is believed the bill is being reintroduced this week for a new vote.

Lancaster County – Taxes & Bonds
Councilman Jose Luis showed a short recording of a recent council meeting to illustrate what can happen to help make us aware of why we should all be interested in what happens at the local level. This particular video showed a discussion around the currently proposed budget.

Councilman Luis discussed potential tax increases (yes more than one) coming to Indian Land and why input from citizens is important before items are passed,  not after.

The County Council is not responsible for the $585 million school bond issue which will be on the November ballot.  This is the responsibility of the Lancaster County School Board.
